Estrella Science Fair
Kyrene de la Estrella Science Fair Home Page
Calling all young scientists! It's time for the Estrella annual science fair! All students are encouraged to participate by working on a science project at home, and displaying it proudly at the fair for the world to see. Below are the basic guidelines, and be sure to check out the rest of the website for more details.
Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair must register in advance through
this online form
. We strongly encourage early registration in order to reserve your space and your project board. Final registration deadline is extended to 2/19/2010. Here are the
basic science fair rules
for your review as well as a
Project Schedule
for guidance to encourage a stress free timeline. Remember, dates for submittal are only a suggestion, but it will make it more painless.
Projects should be student driven.
Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. For especially young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to call the project their own. Please see the
Parent Guide
Even K-2 should participate -REMBEMBER: Writing is not a necessity - sometimes pictures convey the info just fine.
Working Individually or with Partners
There has been a great deal of interest in working with partners. Working with partners can offer a good support system and a wonderful learning experience. Individual work is encouraged, but working in groups of two will be allowed this year as well. Please be sure that it is an equal partnership.
Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the internet is full of resources to help you choose a topic. We ask that you go to the topic selection wizard at http://sciencebuddies.com. WE will use this site to reinforce the project schedule received through the Kyrene site. Once students have their topic chosen, parents will have the chance to approve this topic with a
project proposal form
that can be emailed to the coordinator or submitted to the school front office. For those parents that are non-scientific please review this
Non-Scientific Parent Guide
.
Judging and awards.
Our science fair goal is to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a deep lifelong passion for science. Each participant will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to a judge. We are planning for all to have a ice cream this evening and ribbons will be awarded to 1st,2nd, and 3rd places for grade (K-2) and (3-5) as two groups.
Remember Photographs!
Pictures can be very important part of conveying information. Try to ensure you take numberous pictures during all stages and happenings of your experimental procedures. These can be used on your display board and we encourage you to allow us to utilize some of them during the evening of the science fair. We will be displaying a slide show of photos and videos taken by you! Your photos can be downloaded through the link at the top of this page. Note: Some submissions may not be included in the show.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We have all kinds of different jobs to be done, so if think you can spare an hour or two on the day of the fair, we would love your help. Please contact Carol Daly at cdaly@rfnozick.com and sign up now!
Help for Students
Science fair clinic hours will be every Tuesday 10:30-12:30 in the library for all students to come for any help they need for their project. We will try to ensure that the clinic hours are announced at the morning announcements. Email help is also available. If you are a science person and can help even once a month, please let us know at cdaly@rfnozick.com
Experiment Ideas.
Students new to science experiments may be uncomfortable initially putting the whole thing together themselves. www.Sciencebuddies.com has project ideas for all grade levels and are complete. You can also review the following r grade level documents with links to helpful web sites for science project ideas

. After students have decided on their projects please have them also consider the
Kids Science Challenge
for 3rd through 5th graders. Their project can have dual purpose of competing within their school and on a national level. To keep the Scientific Method in your mind, please print out the
Scientific Method flow chart
as well as an

LET'S GET STARTED!!!
We are following the Scientific Method. We will try to break it down into the following steps. Follow the links for more discussion and for supporting documents, respectively.
